I had the great opportunity to spend a few hours in Bremerhaven, Germany back in August 2018. This is both a major seaport on the North Sea, and home of the German maritime Museum. For me, the greatest exhibit there was the WWII era Type XXI submarine “Wilhelm Bauer.” The only surviving sub of the Type XXI U-boat class, she was commissioned as U-2540 in February 1945. In March 1945 she was scuttled by her crew in the North Sea as Germany surrendered. In 1957 the sub was salvaged, renovated, and placed back into commission as a training sub renamed Wilhelm Bauer. She was ultimately decommissioned in August 1968 and turned over to the German Maritime Museum, open for public display.
Here are a few photos of this wonderful submarine. Ron Charest

Stern View of the Wilhelm Bauer
Looking at the exterior of the German WWII-era submarine Wilhelm Bauer. Seen from the stern area, with rigged-out bow planes visible at the bow. The Wilhelm Bauer is the only surviving Type XXI class submarine. She pioneered a streamlined hull optimized for underwater, as opposed to the then-current submarine designs which were essentially surface craft that could submerge for short periods of time.

A detailed view of the sail structure sowing the raised periscope, snorkel mast., and radio communications antennas. The Germans were the first to use submarine snorkel masts, which allows the sub to run the engines while still submerged. The Type XXI submarines were the first to use an extendable snorkel, as opposed to a fixed-position mast.

The Divers Lockout Chamber
The Wilhelm Bauer was equipped with a divers lockout chamber, so "frogmen" (aka: Scuba Divers) could exit and return to the sub. This was another pioneering concept in submarine design.
