Photos from the wonderful tropical nation of Belize. I took these photos during a trip in 1999 with a group of travel journalists, sponsored by the Belize national tourism bureau.

Mayan Ruins
Belize was once part of the Mayan Empire, and there are many Mayan structures dotted around the country.

The Belize Commuter Airline
Small commuter flights are an important part of the country's internal transportation.

Monkey River Explorers
Boat trips up the Monkey River are a significant part of ecotourism for southern Belize. Most trips originate from Placencia or Roberts Grove, both marinas on the southern part of the Placencia Peninsula, located approximately 35 kilometres northeast of the mouth of the Monkey River. These small motorised boats typically stop at Monkey River Town for lunch and an exposure to the roadless native populace at that village. Most often the boat trips land at a location about ten kilometers upriver from the mouth to allow visitors a walk through the secondary growth forest.

Cottages of Rum Point Inn
The cottages in this resort are made of Ferro-concrete. They reminded me of what houses might look like in the Flintstone's town of Bedrock.

Waterfront Home on the Monkey River
The Monkey River is one of six large watersheds in the 1 million acre (4,000 km²) Maya Mountain Marine Area Transect, which connects the Maya Mountains to the coastal waters of the Gulf of Honduras. According to The Nature Conservancy: "The Monkey River in southern Belize supports one of the most pristine coral reefs in Central America, which is part of the second largest barrier-reef system in the world." Thus the water quality of the Monkey River supports not only freshwater species in the river's upper reaches and estuarine species in the lower reaches, but also the sensitive offshore Belize Barrier Reef.

This is Belize
Taken with permission of the owner of the resort controlling this section of beach. The person in the photo is the owner with her dog. This hammock is the subject of one of the most popular postcards sold in Belize at the time of this photo.

River lined with Mangroves
Taken while traveling upriver on a commuter boat from Ambergris Kaye to a jungle resort spa on Belize mainland immediately across the sound. Boat was traveling at a rather high rate of speed for this narrow river.

More Children at Play
Third photo from my sequence. These children were some of the happiest and most playful group I've ever enjoyed watching.

The One-Legged Woodcarver
This man had lost one leg due to injury, and now helped support his family by wood carving.

Children at Play
Another in the sequence of candid photos of children playing in a small village Placencia Peninsula.
