And so, it finally happened. After over a year of false starts and running up a down escalator. Last week, Friday August 20, my office held a small but pleasant retirement ceremony for me, then I was gone.

I am now officially retired from full time work and back home in Charlotte. I guess, let the fun begin?

A Week of Recovery

So for the past five months I was living the life of a Geobachelor while working from my Government office in Washington, D.C. Winnie was back home in Charlotte tending to our house. It was a more exhausting life than I expected. I was doing daily commutes for the first time in five years, since the start of the great Zombie Apocalypse shutdown in March 2020. I was also dealing with making my own meals and other chores, while still trying to help Winnie take care of issues she couldn’t manage.

On Friday, August 29, my office held a small going away/retirement party for me. It was the Friday before Labor Day, so lots of people were out that day. No big deal for me, as I didn’t ask for anything really big. I had a really nice going away/working remote party last year, which was what I really wanted. During this past Friday’s ceremony, I received my retirement flag for five years of Government service, my official retirement certificate, and a plaque of the ship we’ll someday see delivered.

I turned in my Government badge as I passed through the entrance security office, walked out of the building, and that was it.

Returning Home

That Friday evening I had dinner with my cousins and Aunt still living in Woodbridge. I also had a chance to say goodbye to my host family who I rented a room from. They were decent hosts/landlords during my stay here, and made my life that much easier.

I loaded up the RV Friday evening and cleaned up my rented room as best as I could. Saturday morning I was driving south by 7:00AM. After the many times I’ve made this drive, I know the route between Woodbridge and Charlotte very well. I arrived home about 3:00 PM to Winnie waiting for me.

Resting Up

For the past week I’ve just been resting, getting reacquainted with Winnie, and poking around the house. I’m officially retired and fortunate to have the resources to stay retired, if I want to.

I’m not sure what I’ll do next. But I’ll think of something.
