In a few days, Winnie and I will be heading out on a vacation trip I’ve wanted to do since about 1979. We’re headed to Peru for a two week tour of this magical South American country.
In the Beginning
Back on my first submarine, the USS Scamp (SSN 588), we made a five-month South American UNITAS cruise, with that particular event titled UNITAS XIX (19). In 1979 it was in fact a “cocktail cruise,” as we spent a few days playing naval exercises with a given host nation, then several days in port with orders to “have fun.” Which, I can assure my readers, us sailors did in fact have fun.
Then on to the next host country.
Of the eight nations we visited, Peru was for me the most magical. We were in Lima long enough for me to take an offered three-day/two night trip up to Cusco, and visit to the archeological site of Machu Pichu. For me it was a teaser, and I left promising myself I’d someday return for a longer visit.
That day has finally arrived.
Package Tour
We’ve arranged a package tour with an in-country outfitter Alpaca Expeditions. After a lot of research, this seemed to be one of the larger operators in Peru with a nice offering of tours. Given I’ve waited so long to make this trip, and probably will not have a chance to come back, we’ll be covering a lot of territory.
Planned Itinerary
We plan on exploring the following locations and sights:
- The capital city of Lima
- South to the Ballestas Islands and Huacachina
- Overflight to view the lines in the Plains of Nazca
- Several days in Puerto Maldonado, in the northeast corner of Peru in the Amazon rainforest
- Several days in Cusco, with day hikes to Machu Pichu and surrounding mountain areas
- Several days in Lake Titicaca and the town of Taquile Island
So this will be quite the adventure. Pictures and trip report when I return!
